    Description

    Here we have a
Vintage Brass Keuffel & Esser Co. ( K & E ) Surveyor or Forester Staff Compass.
Keuffel and Esser started in New York in 1867, selling drawing materials and drafting supplies. In 1876, K & E started selling surveying instruments, barometers and other scientific instruments.  The dial is marked: KEUFFEL & ESSER CO.  263 (the serial no.)  NEW YORK   CHICAGO.  This is a 5" diameter compass that is designed to be mount on a Jacob's Staff.  The compass needs the scree-on fitting that goes on the bottom of the compass.  All of the brass is in very good condition with a nice aged patina finish. It has foldable sighting vanes that are approx. 3-1/2" tall.  The vane with the sighting wire has a slight bend in it.  The compass needle swings freely and has a thumbscrew lift/lock (on bottom) for the needle when transporting the compass.  The compass dial has two very small spirit bubble vials.  (One vial is dry).  The glass cover plate is in very good condition with the exception of a very small internal edge chip. No owner's marks.
