Description
Rare 1875 39 Star American Flag For 1876 Centennial International Flags. Measuring 17 1/2 X 24” this is an original “Patented Dec. 28, 1875” cotton flag with 39 stars. This was made in anticipation for the Centennial Celebrations in 1876. Colorado had recently become the 38th state and the maker of this apparently thought that by the time of the Centennial on July 4, 1876, there would be another state added to the Union. He was incorrect and there was never actually an official 39 star flag. On the outer border are the flags of the other nations who were to be present at the Exposition. Has some light folds as seen, and some of the red coloring has run in places so it must have gotten a little wet at some point long ago. Nice shape otherwise and a great piece of American history.
